ABOUT THE PLAY:

“Jitney is the eighth play in August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle.

It takes place in The Hill District of Pittsburgh in 1977, in a gypsy cab station, during Pittsburgh’s period of so-called “urban renewal.”

As the city tries to shut down businesses -- including the cab station -- to make way for a new building, we meet five gypsy cab drivers struggling to survive.

Wilson’s ensemble piece puts human faces to the process of gentrification seizing the United States, telling of the specific human struggles of

Becker, Youngblood, Turnbo, Fielding and Doub as they cling to a nostalgic past, while reaching for an uncertain future.”

How to Dazzle the Directing Team:

1. Know the show. With YouTube and Spotify out there, you can listen and even watch certain elements. Come in with knowledge of the Broadway beyond the movie.
2. Sing where you fit. The Broadway voices present in a more operatic tone than the movie soundtrack. The voice styles are specific. Find your voice...
3. Use the tracks to rehearse and audition. Tracks will be provided for you to choose from. They are specific to roles.

Ariel should have a lyrical soprano sound – please no “Part of Your World.” Use the audition tracks.

4. After you prepare your vocals - watch yourself in the mirror or film your audition on your cell phone. In the COVID year of video submission – we all learned the time it takes to prepare and adequately capture an audition by video. It is a great training ground for your face and hands.
5. Use the SignUpGenius to reserve a slot. In order to maximize your time and minimize the hassle, we ask that you sign up in advance.
6. Show up early, dress appropriately (like a job interview, not in costume, shoes and clothes you can move in, not workout wear.)

7. Relax. Breathe. Do a cartwheel (to physically relax you) and know that we need you as much as you want this.
8. Manage your expectations. Yes, we all go to that audition with a dream in mind. But we also learn from every experience and gain from every production. Ensemble is a great way to do a show, dance all the numbers, and have no lines to learn! It is also a great stepping stone.
9. Be honest on your audition forms: about CONFLICTS (know in advance when you are leaving town) and the ROLE you are most interested in. When people list many, I have no idea what to consider them for. By nature of the audition and the involvement in community theatre, I know you will accept any role in the show.
10. Celebrate the show, the cast, your role, and the experience. If you want to succeed in this business on the community, educational, camp, church, and even professional level - you have to be sincere. I cast a lot of shows, teach a lot of kids, and work in a lot of theatres. Your reputation is as important as your audition.

--see you at the theatre Scott, Saub, & Mr. Sauber!
