Our Programs

SLT has an array of programs providing wide opportunities for members of the community to become involved in the art of theatre.


Subscription Season

Forming the heart of organizations effort is our six play subscription season. Consisting of a mix of comedy and drama, musicals and straight plays, mystery and farce these plays provide the substance of our production effort. Auditions are open to the public. And newcomers are always welcome. Since these tend to be our largest productions they provide broadest range of opportunities for participation. Whether it been on stage, in the light booth, back stage or in the front of the house there is a place for everyone here. Each production usually has approximately six weeks of rehearsal followed by three or four weeks of performances. There is no charge for participation but you are required to provide your own costuming.
 

Young Actors Theatre of Slidell

Slidell Little Theatre’s renowned children's program designed to introduce young people between the ages of four and graduating high school seniors to the stage. The Mini-YATS program engages children from four to eight for five days from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., during which they learn their lines, music and blocking, make their props and costumes if necessary. The week culminates in a performance on Saturday afternoon.

The older YATS participants are separated by age groups to form the casts of up to five different productions. The older groups begin the session by attending a series of workshops designed to expose them to some of the skills needed for the stage. Ranging from dance and voice to stage combat and culminating in auditioning skills they are ready to tackle the audition process. Often viewed as the toughest part of the art they are guided through their own audition in a supportive atmosphere designed to identify the participants strengths so the best opportunity for success within his/her particular play can be identified. All participants are then cast into appropriate roles. And the rehearsal process begins.

The Juniors groups usually perform plays written for young people that last in the range of one to one and a half hours. The Young Seniors and Senior groups stage full two act plays, with the Seniors performing a Broadway musical. The programs end with cast parties for each of the groups. Teenagers who participate during their high school years become eligible to apply for The Lonnie Hass Scholarship, which is awarded to graduating seniors who intend to study the performing arts in college. There is a fee for participation in the YATS program, with special adjusted rates for members of SLT. Look for the announcement for registration in the spring on our website. 

Senior Theatre

For those of us who are older and have the benefits of a flexible schedule but looking for something with a bit less time commitment SLT has a program for Seniors. Performing material geared to our interests this program is designed with short rehearsal times and somewhat briefer performance schedules. Performance may be at SLT or at other locations. Again there is no charge for participation but you may required to provide your own costumes.


The Second Stage

This program is designed to both take advantage of times when the theatre is dark as well as provide opportunities to produce works that may not be suitable for the regular subscription season. It may be a play produced by SLT or by an outside production company. These productions will usually run for one or two weekends, between the other shows.
