Slidell Little Theatre’s renowned children’s program is designed to introduce young people to the stage, beginning at age four through the summer after their high school graduation. The program offers a supportive learning atmosphere where youth can explore all aspects of theatre, including the technical behind-the-scenes work.
The Mini-YATS program engages children aged four to eight for a week-long camp. During the week, they work on lines, music, and blocking, and they make their props and costumes. The week culminates in a performance on Saturday morning.
The older YATS participants are separated into four age groups, each working on its own production. They begin the program by attending a series of workshops designed to expose them to some of the skills needed for the stage, ranging from dance and voice to stage combat and auditioning skills. YATS participants are then guided through their auditions in a manner designed to identify their individual strengths, providing each with the best opportunity for success within his or her age group. Everyone is then cast into appropriate roles, and the rehearsal process begins.
Each of the four groups performs a musical that properly reflects their age group, with the Young Senior and Senior groups performing a two-act Broadway musical. There is a fee to participate in the YATS program, with adjusted rates for members of SLT. Look for the announcement for registration in the spring, usually in early April.
