Slidell Little Theatre’s 55th Season is a colorful one:
Season Opener (Aug. 25 – Sept. 10th) The Wiz A beloved Broadway gem, The Wiz infuses L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with a dazzling mix of rock, gospel, and soul music. This timeless tale of Dorothy’s adventures through the Land of Oz is a fun, family-friendly, modern musical and one of the most popular shows for audiences of all ages. Directed by a long-time supporter and contributor to the SLT stage, Joshua Wayne Brewer.
(Oct. 6th – Oct. 22nd) MacBeth A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia. Directed by Julie Generes, she last directed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as the 2016-17 season-ender, Young Frankenstein.
(Nov. 24th – Dec. 10th) The Happy Elf A new musical comedy by the Grammy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated composer and lyricist, Harry Connick, Jr.’s tells the tale of Eubie the Elf, a lovable fellow who wants to spread Christmas joy throughout the town of Bluesville. Hoping to introduce a new generation of children to the joys of jazz, Connick has crafted a musical landscape against which Eubie’s story unfolds. Directed by Scott Sauber, who last brought Shrek, the Musical as SLT’s 2016-17 season opener, this show is sure to be a hit.
(Jan. 19th – Feb. 4th) Peter and the Starcatcher Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair... and the bonds of friendship, duty and love. Directed by Gary Mendoza, St. Tammany Parish’s 2016 Performing Artist of the Year.
(Mar. 9th – Mar. 25th) The Member’s Choice Winner. Selected between two Neil Simon Play’s, 45 Seconds from Broadway was chosen by the Slidell Little Theatre members as the show they want to see performed. 45 Seconds from Broadway From Neil Simon, here is another revealing comedy behind the scenes in the entertainment world, this time near the heart of the theatre district. 45 Seconds from Broadway takes place in the legendary “Polish Tea Room” on New York’s 47th Street. Here Broadway theatre personalities washed-up and on-the-rise, gather to schmooz even as they lose. This touching valentine to New York offers great acting roles as Neil Simon continues his exploration of the foibles and funny in the human comedy. Directed by Lee Dukes.
Season Closer (Apr. 27th – May 13th) The Addams Family Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before–keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. This show will definitely broaden your definition of what is a “normal” family. Directed by another long-time SLT veteran, Larry Johnson, Jr. Larry’s last show directed at SLT was the smash hit Spamalot.
